Today I want to talk about one of the most commonly used words in the world of black metal, which is the word "kvlt". The word "kvlt" (pronounced Cult) is used in reference to many things. It's unclear what the origin of the word is or where it came from, but it is understood in the black metal world as a very powerful word. One theory on where it came from is from the Roman version of the word, because they used "v" where a "u" is supposed to be.

But what does it mean you may ask. Well, the best way to describe it, is to associate it with everyday words like "cool" or "awesome". Kvlt can be used to describe a band, a record, or just the way of all things black metal.

One of my favorite examples of the word is in reference to an album. According to the unwritten laws of black metal, as well as the 101 Rules of Black Metal, an album is kvlt if it is released in extremely limited quantities. The record also must sound underprocessed so much so that everything just sounds like static and the singer must sound like someone who swallowed rubbing alcohol and broken glass at once.

You could also say that someone who walks around with long hair, black shirts with logos of black metal bands on it, knee high combat boots and either a pentacle necklace or an inverted cross necklace, is kvlt. Or you could just say that he's a poser of some sort, the choice is yours.

Nevertheless, kvlt is something that is very hard to understand unless one takes a second to listen to GOOD black metal. I say "good" because there are several black metal bands that have become almost household names in the metal world overall. Good black metal is very different from these bands. It is also significantly harder to appreciate to the commoner.

So I will take this time to say "Listen to black metal, my friends." Listed below are some bands and songs that I, and many others like me, would consider "kvlt"
"Transylvanian Hunger" by Darkthrone
"I Am the Black Wizards" by Emperor
"Freezing Moon" by Mayhem
"War" by Burzum
"Tyrants" by Immortal

Rodey F.D. Black Metal is not for everyone. However, I believe that if a little light was shed on the subject, it would give people some clarity about the genre.

Black Metal originates from Scandenavia, Norway in particular. The first wave of Black Metal bands were simply a few bands that decided to play metal that was fast and brutal. And while those bands sounded quite different than modern Black Metal bands, the idea of music that was "fast and brutal" brought forth many many more bands.

The second wave of black metal, which happened from 1988 to about 1995, took the original idea of black metal to a higher level. The music became darker both musically and lyrically. The lyrics moved from being about nature and stars to being about Satanism, sex, murder, and torture. With the second wave of black metal came a plague of murders, suicides and church burnings in Norway. The country was in a crisis mode, especially since the 1994 Olympics were to be held in Oslo.

Once the killings and burning had stopped and justice was brought to all of the assailants of these crimes, it seemed as though black metal was done for good. But while the torch had fallen to the ground, the flame was not extinguished and it was only a matter of time before the remaining black metal bands regrouped and took up the torch to keep black metal alive.

Today, black metal has many subgenres within it, but the message is still about rebellion and resistence. This ideaology came from Pagans trapped in the ever conservative Norway and who needed a way out of the normal lifestyle and ideaology.

In America, black metal bands are few and far between, but the scene is growing and one thing that is on the mind of most all American black metal bands is that they want to bring black metal to the masses in a time where the American music scene is polluted by poser bands filled with kids with neck tattoos, humongous earrings, ultra skinny jeans and flat brimmed hats.

Rodey F.D.
